Choosing a screen protector material is at a generational handover. Gen-1 rigid PET films have left the stage, Gen-2 TPU hydrogel films own the mainstream, and more curved-screen flagships and smartwatch accessories are moving to the third generation: EPU (Elastic Polyurethane). In one sentence, an EPU screen protector is the upgraded version of a TPU hydrogel film — faster self-healing, higher light transmittance, better yellowing resistance and a more stable fit on curved edges, while keeping everything a soft film is loved for: it conforms to curves and never shatters. This guide explains the material science, the five metrics that actually matter, how EPU performs on curved phones and smartwatches — and where it honestly does not belong — then closes with a B2B sourcing checklist.
EPU stands for Elastic Polyurethane, a flexible polymer engineered as the successor to TPU. Soft-film materials have evolved through three generations (industry evolution summary; see My Devia material primer, 2026):
One market note: English retail sites often lump EPU and TPU together as "hydrogel," because both are water-applied soft films. In the industry, EPU and ordinary TPU hydrogel are two different generations — always specify the base material when buying.

Industry-typical comparison (formulas vary by maker; batch test reports govern):
| Metric | TPU hydrogel (Gen 2) | EPU film (Gen 3) |
|---|---|---|
| Self-healing | Slow: fine scratches recover in ~24 h | ~30 s for shallow scratches, ~10 min for deeper ones (in-house test) |
| Light transmittance | ≈91–92% | ≈93% base film, above ordinary TPU (IFTech published specs) |
| Yellowing, 24 h aging | Index 11.5 | Index 6.2 (IFTech lab data) |
| Curved-edge fit | Good, but more rebound and edge lift | Better elastic recovery, stable edges |
| Oleophobic layer | Fades within 1–2 weeks | Better coating compatibility, lasts longer |
| Touch feel | Slight rubbery drag | Smoother; premium grades read close to glass (My Devia) |
Bottom line: TPU solved "can a soft film fit a curve"; EPU solves "can a soft film stay good for the long run" — recovery speed, clarity and coating life are exactly where users complain about hydrogel films.

The curved-screen dilemma is analyzed in detail in our anti-scratch UV PET guide: hot-bend 3D tempered glass fits the curve, but its bent edges chip easily, its silk-printed border eats into the display, and cost runs high. EPU takes the other route: it buys full-edge fit with material elasticity — the film stretches with the arc, settles at the edges, leaves no black border, and a flexible laminate simply cannot shatter.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and MacRumors (July 2026), Apple plans a 20th-anniversary iPhone in fall 2027 with a quad-curve, micro-bend design (unconfirmed by Apple). A four-sided curve enlarges the curved area further — exactly the scenario where EPU's elasticity advantage over TPU compounds.
If curved phones are a contest, smartwatches are a walkover. Mainstream watch lenses (Apple Watch and peers) use 2.5D or stronger curved glass with extremely narrow bezels, which puts tempered glass in an impossible spot:
EPU answers all three at the generational level: elastic conformance holds the big arc; a flexible laminate cannot shatter and shrugs off knocks; and everyday fine scratches recover in ~30 seconds at room temperature (deeper ones in ~10 minutes, in-house test) — self-healing is worth more on an exposed watch than on a phone. For model-specific suppliers, watch films are a high-repurchase line: one SKU per model, replaced on demand, rolling with every new watch release.

A material guide that only lists strengths is worth little. EPU is currently not suitable for foldable inner screens. The shortcoming is temperature stability: EPU stiffens in cold environments, and a foldable inner screen endures daily repeated bending — a film that has gone stiff is prone to cracking and breaking under accumulated folding stress in our production experience. Foldable re-film demand is real, but it belongs to films specifically engineered for folding endurance; do not put regular EPU on that list. Sales and purchasing teams should both keep this boundary in mind.

Values above are industry-typical references except where marked as in-house data; makers' batch test reports take precedence.
An honest factory view: there is no all-purpose material, only matched scenarios.
| Scenario need | First choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Max scratch resistance, glass-like hardness on curved phones | Anti-scratch UV PET (hard-coated route) | #0000 steel wool 20,000+ cycles, full-edge UV bond (see our UV PET guide) |
| Self-healing + ultra-thin fit on curved phones / watches | EPU film | Flagship of the flexible route; outperforms TPU on fit and coating life; not for foldables |
| Budget volume markets | TPU hydrogel | Low cost, adequate basic flexible protection |
| Flat tablets / car displays needing hardness | Tempered glass / hard PET | Glass hardness holds on flat panels |
EPU and UV PET are parallel routes, not rivals: flexible self-healing versus hardened anti-scratch. Stock both and you cover the same curved-phone and watch customers on both preferences — a portfolio play, not a single bet.
HANGMO's setup for this category: EPU is one of four material families (TPU, EPU, UV, PET), with five EPU functions — HD / MATTE / BLUECUT / PRIVACY / AR-EPU — in BASIC/PRO/ULTRA grades (browse the EPU film series); manufacturing since 2018, 5 million pieces monthly, exports to 20+ countries, Class 1M cleanroom; cutting films fit all mainstream cutting-machine models; custom sizes, packaging and logo supported.
Q1: Are EPU film and TPU hydrogel the same thing?
No. English retail often files both under "hydrogel," but EPU (elastic polyurethane) is a generation above TPU: faster self-healing, higher clarity, better yellowing resistance, better edge rebound. Ask suppliers to state the base material in writing.
Q2: Does an EPU film affect touch sensitivity or in-display fingerprint unlock?
No. Typical thickness is ~0.1 mm, and the film conforms closely; touch and fingerprint unlock stay normal, including edge swipes and rotating watch crowns.
Q3: Does EPU film fit Apple Watch? Is every model covered?
Yes — and watches are EPU's best-fit scenario: only a soft film holds a large-curvature lens. Models are die-cut from a model database covering mainstream Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch and other lines; new models can be developed on request.
Q4: Is EPU film drop-proof?
Flexible film cushions knocks with rebound, but drop protection mainly comes from device structure and cases — do not buy inflated claims. EPU's core value is self-healing scratch resistance and a durable, conformal fit.
Q5: Can EPU film be used on foldable inner screens?
Not recommended today. EPU's temperature stability is insufficient: it stiffens in the cold, and repeated folding stress on a stiffened film leads to cracks and breaks in our production experience. Use films specifically engineered for folding endurance.
Q6: Will EPU film yellow or lift over time?
Yellowing is exactly where EPU improves most over TPU (see the aging comparison above); it stays clear in normal service. Edge rebound is more stable than TPU, so lifting is rarer — provided the film is die-cut to the model.
Q7: What are your MOQ, lead time and customization options?
Small-batch samples first, repeat orders after confirmation. Lead time from deposit: ~1 week under 100k pcs, ~2 weeks for 100–200k, ~3 weeks for 200–500k; custom sizes, packaging and logo available.
The soft-film market has already changed generations: TPU solved "can it fit," EPU solves "does it last." For distributors and brands, three moves: benchmark your current TPU supplier against an EPU sample on the five metrics above → audit the factory's model database and cutting-machine compatibility → start a trial order with high-repurchase watch-model SKUs, then extend to curved-screen lines.
